If you live in Montgomery County and want free, unbiased Medicare guidance, I would start with Montgomery County SHIP at 301-255-4250. The program offers confidential one-on-one counseling, and its current contact page says a counselor returns messages within three business days. Montgomery County SHIP contact page

Medicare Open Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7 each year, with changes generally taking effect January 1. Gathering your plan notices, medication list, doctors, and questions early in that window makes comparisons easier and leaves time to check any coverage changes before the deadline.

What Montgomery County SHIP can help with

SHIP stands for State Health Insurance Assistance Program. Maryland describes SHIP as free, unbiased help from certified counselors who do not sell insurance. Counselors can explain Medicare, compare plan types, screen for savings programs, help with billing or appeals questions, and help people recognize possible fraud. Calls are free and confidential. The Montgomery County program says its services include Medicare Advantage, Medigap, Part D, Medicare Savings Programs, Extra Help, employer coverage, billing problems, and enrollment guidance. It serves seniors and adults under 65 with long-term disabilities, along with family members and caregivers who are helping them.

I think SHIP is a particularly good first call when you want a no-sales conversation, need help understanding a Medicare notice, are dealing with a claim or appeal, or want to know whether a cost-saving program may apply to you.

Where to find free Medicare seminars in Montgomery County

Montgomery County SHIP and local public libraries list Medicare education sessions. I would use their current calendars rather than rely on an old event date, because times, locations, and registration rules can change.

SHIP posts upcoming Medicare presentations with dates, locations, and program details. Check the listing for the session you want and confirm it before making plans. You can also call 301-255-4250 to ask about counseling and educational sessions. Browse SHIP events

Montgomery County Public Libraries events

The library events calendar is another place to find Medicare talks. Search for Medicare or SHIP, then check the specific branch, date, start and end time, and whether registration is required. Call the listed library branch if you need an accommodation or want to confirm the schedule before traveling. Search library events

What I would gather before asking for help

A counselor or agent can only compare what matters to you if the information is current. I would put these items in one folder:

  • Your current Medicare card and plan member card for a private appointment. Do not email card numbers unless the recipient gives you a secure method.

  • Your plan’s Annual Notice of Change and Evidence of Coverage.

  • A current medication list with exact drug names, strengths, and how often you take each one.

  • Your preferred pharmacies, including any mail-order preference.

  • The names of doctors, specialists, hospitals, and other providers you want to keep.

  • A short list of priorities, such as predictable costs, travel coverage, provider flexibility, or extra benefits.

  • Any Medicare notice, bill, denial, or appeal letter connected to the question you need answered.

For privacy, I would not post medication lists, Medicare numbers, or medical details in a public comment or social-media message.

What Open Enrollment can change

Medicare says that from October 15 through December 7 you can join, drop, or switch Medicare Advantage plans; join, drop, or switch a stand-alone Part D drug plan if you use Original Medicare; or change between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage. The plan must receive the enrollment request by December 7 for a January 1 effective date. Official Medicare Open Enrollment guidance

One caution matters: changing to Original Medicare does not automatically guarantee that you can buy any Medigap policy you want. Medicare notes that there are limits on when you can add Medigap coverage. Before leaving a Medicare Advantage plan, I would confirm your Medigap options and timing rather than assuming. My plain-English comparison of Medicare Advantage and Medigap in Maryland explains the broader trade-offs.

If prescription coverage is the main concern, review each plan using your actual medication list and pharmacies. The federal limits are only part of the picture; formularies, tiers, copays, and pharmacy networks still differ. I also have a separate guide to Medicare Part D costs in 2026 if you want the current deductible and out-of-pocket threshold explained first.

SHIP, Medicare.gov, or an independent agent?

These resources do different jobs. SHIP provides public, non-commercial counseling and is a strong choice for unbiased education, savings-program screening, appeals, billing problems, and fraud questions. Medicare.gov is the official source for rules and Plan Compare. An independent agent can explain and enroll people in plans from the insurers that agent represents, but no agent necessarily represents every plan.

I am an independent insurance agent, so my role is commercial and different from SHIP. I can help compare Medicare Advantage, Medigap, and Part D options from the carriers I represent. For a no-sales review or a complicated Medicare rights issue, I would point a Montgomery County resident to SHIP first.

My practical suggestion is simple: save the checklist above and contact Montgomery County SHIP with enough time to review your choices before the enrollment deadline that applies to you.
